Rite of Christian Iniation of Adults (RCIA) and Welcome Back Sessions are for adults who are seeking for a church to call their own. We will help you prepare for Baptism and full initiation in the Catholic Faith. If already baptized in the Christian Faith we will assist you to prepare for Full Initiation in the Catholic Faith through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Just call or email us and we’ll set a day/time of your convenience to have a chat about your needs and the process.

If you or someone you know has been away from church practice, we welcome you and invite you to gather with us for Sunday Mass and if convenient for you, we’ll arrange for a brief chat after mass.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is primarily about conversion and as we adults know, we are always in need of conversion. Are you looking for a church to call your own? Do you struggle with questions about life -death- suffering- hope – forgiveness- love- God? If so, the RCIA process could be for you.
If you are not connected to any faith community, you are most welcome to explore the Catholic faith with us at Guardian Angels. If you feel it is for you, you will be formally accepted into the Catholic church in a solemn celebration at an Easter Vigil.

Sponsors: Each candidate will need a sponsor and each catechumen needs a Godparent. We will host an information meeting for all adults who are interested in being an RCIA sponsor for another adult on a Thursday in October 2017 At 7 p.m.
Parish Breakfast on Sunday, November 19, 2017 is sponsored by the RCIA group. Please plan to join us in the Cunnane Parish Center. It is a buffet style breakfast with offerings of fruit, cereal, home baked muffins/casseroles/hard boiled eggs and donuts/coffee/tea/o.j. Many thanks to all who support us ~
Rite of Acceptance: is at 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 26, 2017 for adults and at 10 a.m. Mass, Sunday, Feast of Baptism of Our Lord, January 7, 2018 for adults, teens and children over the age of 7.
Rite of Sending/Rite of Election is Sunday, February 18, 2018 Please gather for 11:30 a.m. Mass with Dismissal. We will have lunch for all RCIA members and their family members immediately following. After lunch and pictures we will start out for Golden Hall, San Diego Concourse for the Rite of Election. Please plan to be there by 1:45 p.m. as music/choirs begin at 3:30 p.m. We have assigned/ticked seating. Ceremony is usually over by 5 p.m. so we should be back in San Diego by 6 p.m.
Retreat 2018 is scheduled for Friday, March 2, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, March 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. RCIA must have a major A+ reason to abstain.
Our RCIA sessions are in the Parish Center. The RCIA groups include Catechumens,Candidates, Godparents, Sponsors, RCIA Team, family members and supporters. Catechumen: a person preparing for Baptism Candidate: a baptized person preparing for full initiation in the Catholic Church. Godparents and Sponsors are from Guardian Angels Parish and need to attend 90% of the regular RCIA sessions. An Information Session for new sponsors is held on the 3rd Thursday of October.
Inquiry Session on the Sundays of May/June and the Thursdays of September. July/August Readings: You will need a Bible … we have Catholic Bibles for purchase for $10 each. To get to know who Jesus is please read the Gospel of Luke … a chapter a day for month of July. To find out about the early christian/catholic church please read the Acts of the Apostles … a chapter a day for month of August.
Previous marriages: Persons in the RCIA process in need of regulating their marriages with the Catholic church need to call the rectory and make an appointment to speak with one of our priests as soon as possible.
Expectations: RCIA catechumens/candidates/sponsors are expected to be involved in parish activities; e.g., October Festival, Parish Retreats, Dinners, Breakfasts, Talks/Presentations open to all adults, outreach delivery trips to Rachel’s House or parish project site on the hillsides of Rosarito, Soup Suppers/Stations during Lent etc.
Rites: There are several Rites during the RCIA process. We usually have the Rite of Acceptance on the Feast of Christ the King and Feast of the Baptism of Jesus. Rite of Sending is usually at 11:30 a.m. Mass on the First Sunday of Lent. Rite of Election and Continuing Conversion is during the same ceremony.
Scrutinies: We will celebrate the scrutinies with the Elect at 10 a.m. Mass on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sunday of Lent. First Reconciliation is 7 p.m.Tuesday of Holy Week or during Parish Retreat.
Retreat/Reflection Time: RCIA are requested to participate in the Parish Retreat during the Season of Lent, weekend of March 2 & 3, 2018. All participants are expected to participate in the ceremonies of Holy Week. Baptism, Professions of Faith, Confirmations, First Eucharist are at Easter Vigil, March 31, 2018.
Mystagogy is during the Thursdays of April and May 2018, Easter Season, and really for the rest of our lives.
